“Speech Bubble Style” – Rare First Release Variant

Starring Bill Murray – Directed by Ivan Reitma

This is a rare and highly sought-after original theatrical one sheet poster for Meatballs, measuring 27 x 41 inches, issued by Paramount Pictures in 1979. This variant features the iconic illustrated cartoon art of the camp counselors in full color, and is distinguished by its large comic-style speech bubbles, a unique style used only in a limited domestic print run.

The bright, comic-book aesthetic perfectly captures the anarchic spirit of the film and its offbeat ensemble cast, led by a young and charismatic Bill Murray in his first starring film role.

Condition Notes:

This poster is folded as originally issued, with moderate wear consistent with age and theater use. Notable condition points:

  • Crossfold and edge wear (particularly along the bottom central fold)

  • Toning and staining visible on reverse side

  • Small separation along central vertical fold

  • No major tears to image area

  • Presents well despite age, and would benefit from linen backing

Note: This is the only copy currently in our collection, and this speech bubble version is significantly rarer than the standard “title logo only” style.
